Where California's Story Begins

Perched at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula, Cabrillo National Monument commemorates the 1542 landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the first European to set foot on the West Coast of the present-day United States. But it's more than a history lesson; it's a place of breathtaking beauty. Here, you'll find the iconic Old Point Loma Lighthouse, a 19th-century beacon frozen in time. Gaze out at jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, San Diego's skyline, and naval ships navigating the bay. Depending on the season and tides, you can witness the great migration of Pacific Gray Whales or explore a fragile, vibrant ecosystem in the rocky intertidal zone, teeming with life.

Planning

Historical Context

The monument is named for Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who led the first European expedition to explore what is now the west coast of the United States. Cabrillo departed from Navidad, Mexico, on June 27, 1542, and entered San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542. His landing is considered the beginning of California's recorded history. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, built in 1855, was one of the first eight lighthouses on the U.S. West Coast and served as a crucial beacon for sailors navigating into the busy port.

Photography Tips

  • Golden hour (late afternoon) provides the best light for photographing the lighthouse and the views towards the ocean
  • Use a wide-angle lens to capture the full scope of the panoramic views
  • A telephoto lens is essential for getting closer shots of downtown San Diego, ships in the bay, and wildlife like whales and birds
  • For tide pool photography, a polarizing filter can help cut glare from the water, revealing the life underneath

Insider Tips

  • Visit on a weekday morning to avoid the biggest crowds
  • Bring your own binoculars for much better views of whales, ships, and the city skyline
  • The Bayside Trail offers incredible, less-seen views of the bay and downtown, but be prepared for an uphill return hike
  • The morning marine layer often burns off by noon; if you arrive to fog, be patient as the views are worth the wait
  • Your entrance pass is valid for 7 consecutive days, so you can return if your tide pool visit gets clouded out.

Stunning Views and So Much History!

The view from Point Loma is simply breathtaking. You can see the entire city, the bay, and the ocean. We visited in March and were lucky enough to spot some gray whales migrating! The old lighthouse is beautifully restored. We booked our vehicle pass online and drove right in. Highly recommended!

A Perfect Half-Day Trip

Cabrillo was a highlight of our San Diego visit. We timed our trip for low tide and the tide pools were incredible! So much life in those little pools. The drive up the peninsula is beautiful too. It felt very peaceful despite being so close to the city. A must-do.

More than just a Lighthouse

I was surprised by how much there is to see here. I came for the lighthouse but stayed for the history. The exhibits on Cabrillo's voyage and the military history of the point were very well done. The Bayside Trail offered a nice walk with a different perspective of the bay. Worth the entry fee.

Bellissima San Diego!

Wow! The panorama is unforgettable. On one side the immense Pacific Ocean, on the other the beautiful bay of San Diego with its skyscrapers and Coronado bridge. We took so many beautiful photos. Climbing the lighthouse stairs was fun, it felt like stepping back in time. Easy to book, easy to visit.

Great for Whale Watching

We specifically came here to try and spot whales from the shore and were not disappointed! We saw several spouts and even a breach in the distance. Bring good binoculars! The rest of the park is very nice, though it can get quite windy so bring a jacket, even on a sunny day.
